sleep (or the lack of it)

the lack of posts reflect the lack of sleep i've been getting (or not getting). ever since baby e arrived, i have yet to have 6 hrs of undisturbed sleep...this is probably the most challenging part of motherhood for me, because i LOVE to sleep. pre baby E, my weekends would be spent catching up on rest, and sunday afternoons would find me blissfully asleep oblivious to the world. post baby E, weekends are spent going out (staying at home on weekdays can get awfully boring, and i'm not brave enough to take her out by myself) just walking at the park or having lunch and then i'll at most catch a short nap of 30-40minutes (if she doesn't make noise) before doing "night duty" in the wee hours of the morning.

thankfully, as she gets older she is starting to sleep more! the 2 most important moves i've learnt is to let her sleep on her tummy (during the day), and swaddle her (during the night). after rocking her and patting her to sleep in my arms, i'll gently lower her onto the mattress onto her tummy so that even if she startles awake she's still quite happy to go back to sleep. previously when i tried to put her to sleep on her back her arms would flail about and she would wake herself up and i would have to repeat the whole process of rocking her to sleep again, which leads to a seriously depressed mom.

swaddling is another miracle cure that i started using only a few days agao. pre swaddle, the most she slept was 4hrs; post swaddle, the number has crept up to 5-6 and there was one super exciting day where she slept for 7hrs (i think the weather helped too..it was raining that night) so yes, swaddling isn't just for the 1 month old baby....i think i'll swaddle her for as long as it takes her to sleep 10hrs a night heh heh

it really is very exciting to see baby E grow everyday. even when she's cranky and cries and spits up milk everywhere, i really thank God for giving me this little girl to love. let's hope she'll learn to love to sleep like her mommy!
